Fishbone
Live At the Temple Bar and More (2002)
Genre: Funk Metal, Alternative Metal, Ska, Funk

Ok this is a live album that has particularity that it has all new songs, which I can’t think of another band that tries the same stunt, so here we go with this brief review.

Vocals and Lyrics: Angelo and Walter do a good job, but nothing to ground breaking in there department and they do not sound too good in the mix. Now the admirable thing about these guys is the fact that they sing and play the horn section on each song, which most not be easy task at all. 7

Instrumentation:
Guitar: Spacey T shines on this album; the Guitar is back in the forefront of the band, some of the songs are really guitar driven. This guy plays the hell out of his guitar and uses some interesting trippy effects.
Bass: Norwood, plays at his normal level, he doesn’t do too much. The good thing is that he’s high in the mix so you can hear him rumbling in the back of each track.
Drums: John Steward, does a much better job than his previous work with Fishbone, that was devoid of feeling, now he’s playing near a Fish Fisher level.
BW: The horn section gives a great amount of energy to each song, and I most add Angelo unleashes some great Sax solos. And you can hear Angelo play the Theremin here and there. 8.5

Melody and Structure: There are a lot of tempo changes and radical shifts in the songs, so nothing isn’t too predictable; they are not your normal pop songs.7

Sound, Production and Feeling: Sound and production are pretty basic for a live album. Now feeling wise these guys can go from super frantic “In the Heat of Anger”, to super slow funk blues like “Are U Wit It” in a drop of a hat, and that’s not easy at all. 8

Songs: “Demon in Here” is the best song on the album, the try kinds of crazy stuff, fusing hardcore punk, funk metal and classical music, and they get away with it. 7

The Bad: There is one really bad song near the end. -1

Originality: Fishbone gets its energy back, the band had lost on its previous album; there is a great level of energy in each song. It’s also a pretty cool idea putting out a live album with all new songs. 8

Overall: 44.5
