Limp Bizkit+Big Dumb Face+Black Light Burns: complete Discography Review

Today in this post I bring you guys my review of the complete discography (only studio albums) of one of the band that probably polarizes the metal world more than any other band Limp Bizkit, and you can love them or hate them, but this band can really pack a punch in their live shows, so please enjoy my post.

Limp Bizkit
Three Dollar Bill Y'all (1997)

Limp Bizkit Three Dollar Bill Y'All.jpg
I remember being at my grandparents house in Buenos Aires and watching TV and the Counterfeit video pop on the screen and after it ended immediately hit the streets trying to find a record store to so I could get my hand on this band's first album, the thing was that I didn't catch the band's name so it took me forever to find this gem.

Vocals and Lyric: This is Fred's best vocal performance on a album he sound pist and unfiltered, it like a life full of frustration is vomited on tape, jajajaja, and his rapping is much better than some of the stuff we get in the future. 10

Instrumentation:

Wes 1997
Guitar: Wes just attacks with super heavy  riff, he's the principal vehicle of this pretty aggressive album
Bass:  Sam Rivers has some really good bass line, but my favorite is his funky work on Counterfeit.
Drums: John Otto is drummer that has a wide arsenal of drum styles that he applies very well in this album
DJ: This is the first time the I actually hear a DJ actually playing a relevant role in a band not just doing some ornamental scratching, Lethal does some super cool stuff. 7.5

Melody and/or Structure: The songs are interesting and the band play a little with song  structure 10

Sound, Production and Feeling: Some of the sickest guitar distortions that I ever heard are on this album, this is Ross Robinson's best album 10
Songs: Album packs a punch from front to back, but George Michaels Faith is the best track from the album, its so stupid it genius, one of my first band use to have this song in our set list and the `place would explode when we played it. 12
The Bad:
Originality:  These guys with Korn are the harbingers of Nu Metal. 12

Overall:61.5

Significant Other (1999)
Genre: Nu Metal

Limp Bizkit Significant Other.jpg
When I first heard to this album  I thought to myself holy crap these guys totally sold out, but over time I've learned to love this album.

Vocals and Lyric: Fred is one relatable guy he sings about some normal mundane stuff, that seems to get him mad. There are a couple of guest on this album Johnthan Davis, Scott Weiland, Method Man, Aaron Kewis and Les Claypool, but I most mention Scott's  participation on the track "Nobody Like You" the dude reaches some insanely high notes.  10

Instrumentation:

Guitar: Wes is secretly doing some interesting stuff and even though it's  not as heavy sounding his riffs a great.
Bass: Sam  again lands a couple of fantastic bass lines, but the best one is "Rearrange", I remember when that song came out just about every bass player used that song to warm up too.
Wes Woodstock 1999
Drums: Top notch drummer.
DJ: Lethal does his thing with turn tables, but Wes's brother  Scott Borland is credited for using Keyboards and these actual make a nice difference on a couple of track. 7.5
Melody and/or Structure: The band does trade off heaviness for a growth in their song writing, Rearrange is a big step forward in their composition skills, but on the other hand you have Break Stuff which is Neanderthal stupid song but it also works. 10

Sound, Production and Feeling: A  complete 180 in sound compared to their last album, it has a clean and les aggressive mix, it's much more radio friendly. 10
Songs: One can forgive the band for selling out because the songs in general a really good, they score a couple big hits with Nookie, Break Stuff and Reaarrange 13
The Bad: My god Show Me What You got is terrible why did Durst change it from its original version Cambodia that kicked ass I'll never know. -1
Originality: This album pushed Nu Metal to the  mainstream pretty much hijacking the moment from Korn 12

Overall: 61.5

Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water  (2000)
Genre: Nu Metal, Rap Metal, Rap
Limp Bizkit Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water.jpgThe album is very similar to Significant other, mostly a progression from that album, but what is totally surprising is that  the band steals from themselves on  some of the stuff that they do on this album are copies of stuff that they had already done on their last albums like the chorus to Full Nelson is almost exactly the same to the chorus to Stuck on Three dollar bill, then you have Fred just over using his catch phrases from Significant Other and  finally why does Otto do the same drum break on just about every track, that he started to do that on Significant Other.

Vocals and Lyric:  As I said in the intro Fred repeats himself, just over using old ideas, now he basically he saves the album lyrical with Hot Dog the best F U song ever. And personally the guest rappers Xibit and DMX  are not able to land a second rap hit like the one that Limp Bizkit made with Method Man. 6

Instrumentation:

Wes 2000
Guitar: Wes is probably the only high light n the album is super solid and a bit more heavy.
Bass: Sam uses a bass arrangement just one too many times
Drums: Rant aside because of the drum brakes,  My Generation  just has a mind blow groove.
DJ: Lethal is starting to get annoying with the same scratch solos over and over again. 7

Melody and/or Structure: Limp Bizkit are starting to get a little  to predictable in their  song structures . 7

Sound, Production and Feeling: This album centers a bit more around the band, the production isn't as heavy, and it slightly more heavy than Significant Other 8

Songs: This album has 5 fantastic song and a couple of Ok songs that add bolk to the band catalogue   8

The Bad:  Well as I said before the reuse of some ideas just kills me  and sadly the song with Scott Wieland  just doesn't fit in on this album. -2
Originality:  This album is good for one thing to pluck the good tracks out to make a greatest hit album  6

Overall: 42

New Old Songs ( 2001)

Genre: Hip Hop, Alternative Metal

Limp Bizkit New Old Songs.jpgOh boy the existence of this album just start to make it hard to be a Limp Bizkit  album most of the remixs just don't work, it a desperate attempt of Durst to be more relevant with mainstream audience, ticking off his fan base. You have tons of guest producers like Pharrell Williams, Bubba Spraxx and Butch Vig just to name a few, but only good track  on this album is a reworked Faith and Fame mash up ,   guest vocalist Everlast.

Overall: 34.5

Dukelionfightstheterror2.jpg
Big Dumb Face
Duke Lion Fights the Terror!! (2001)
Genre: Comedy Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal
Wes left Limp Bizkit, for some reason that I don't know of,  and formed this band, the thing was that its shockingly a Ween rip off, instead of  trying to make a straight up alternative metal album, Borland lets out his inner Ween free and makes a pretty bizarre album. Lyrically it's very Ween really funny and crazy, but the pitch shifter does tier  after awhile. The album is pretty enjoyable, it's a goof off album.

Overall: 51.6

Results May Vary (2003)
Genre: Nu Metal, Rap Metal/Rock

With a title like this, it really lowers your expectation for this album. plus the fact that Wes had left the band by this time, but I must say if you listen to this album with an open mind it's pretty good.

Vocals and Lyric:  He's trying, jajajaja, by now most fans have come to accept he's not the greatest lyricist, things seem ride on his charisma. 8

Instrumentation:

Guitar: Mike Smith ex Snot (Note if you haven't listen to that band stop what ever you are doing and get their first album), brings a more straight foward metal aproch, and Head guest on Building Bridge 7
Bass/ Drums: finally get back to business and do a great job.
DJ: Lethal progressively becomes more redundant to the band 7.5
Melody and/or Structure:  They try   to mix it up a little adding some metal arrangements here and there, and the band tries to work more with melody. 9

Sound, Production and Feeling:  A much heavier album, that most de appreciated. 9

Songs: In general album track list is pretty enjoyable, now can someone explain to me why this album has two introductions, oh and I like the Who cover "Behind Blues Eye" 14

The Bad: Red Light-Green Light track with Snoop Dogg sucks -1

Originality:  Band trying to redefine itself trying new stuff, nailing on some tracks and not so much on others but you got to give them credit, and personally it a much more solid album than Chocolate 8

The Unquestionable Truth (Part I) (2005)
Genre: Rap Metal, Alternative Metal

The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1).jpg
Wes is back and the band sounds great super heavy, hungry and energetic, now the only bad thing of this album is that Fred tries to pull off a Zack de la Rocha, trying to be serious and talk about social issues, but his lyrics fall flat. It's valid experiment to make a serious concept album but it just doesn't gel, with a band that is known not to take it's self to seriously.  It's pretty short album that never had a part II, but it's pretty enjoyable if you forget the concept and lyrics.
Note DJ lethal doesn't do much on the album and John Otto play on only one track, the rest of the album is played by Sammy Siegler.

Overall: 44.5

Black Light Burns-Cruel Melody.jpg

Black light Burns

Cruel Melody (2007)
Genre: Industrial Metal, Alternative  Metal
This is another band that Wes Borland creates during the mid 2000's that has been pretty consistent with good material and having a more serious in tone than Big Dumb Face or Limp Bizkit, this is pretty much Wes's first solo album, the band actually forms after touring, Happily this is a great album and it's good from front to back. Boland's vocals are much better than I anticipated and  Wes's guitar work is much more refined, plus a couple of solos and some sick riffs. You have two Nine Inch Nails/ A Perfect Circle associates playing on this album with Danny Lohner adding some additional guitars and bass, and Josh Freese on drums. As a guest vocalist on one track you have Sonny More better known as Skrillex. Sam Rivers all is on one track playing the bass.

Overall: 55.5

Gold Cobra (2011)
Genre: Nu Metal, Rap Metal, Alternative Metal

Gold Cobra album cover.jpg
In this album we have a band finally getting its act together   making a super solid album and with the highlight letting Wes rip a couple of  killer solos. They do play it safe they don't break new ground, but Fred vocally is more aggressive reminiscent to Three Dollar Bill Y'all, finally. This album really raises my expectation for their next album.

Overall: 55.5

The Moment you Realize You're Going to Fall (2012)
Genre: Alternative Metal, Alternative Rock, Experimental Rock, Industrial Rock

TheMomentYouRealizeYou'reGoingtoFall.jpg
This is more a band affair than the previous album Cruel Melody, and the band does  establishes its own  sound and style. You can describe this album as  dark, artsy and with lots of texture, breaking away completely  from Wes's Nu Metal origin. This is one of those albums that you like more and more with each listen, you always discover something new on it, I recommend it.

 Overall: 56.4

Lotus Island (2013)
Genre: Industrial Rock, Experimental Rock, Alternative Metal/Rock
Dark and experimental concept album  inspired by Alejandros Jorodowky's movie Holy Mountain, it takes a couple of listens to dig this album it pretty abstract at moments but it becomes a rewarding experience overall, it's a weird mix of Nine Inch Nail and Manson Mechaical Animals at moments, the album has interesting production and has some nice details.

 Overall: 50
